A Little about Me
Where do I begin?
Should I tell you how much I love art, or how it has always been a part of me? A part of myself that I could never imagine separating from.
My name is Sajuni, a self-taught artist based in Melbourne, Australia.
I grew up in the western part of Sri Lanka, in a town called Mount Lavinia. I have always loved saying that name because I think it sounds rather poetic, and in many ways, growing up there was just as poetic as it sounds.
I grew up surrounded by the ocean, and I don’t think I realised then how lucky I was to witness warm tropical sunsets along the coastline, make memories beneath coconut trees and breathe in the salty air carried by the breeze, a scent that still feels nostalgic to me. Looking back now, there was something almost whimsical about it all. Perhaps that is where my love for colour, nature and finding beauty in ordinary things began.
Art was always a part of me. From drawing in the sand as a child to drawing whenever and wherever I could, I was always finding little ways to create.
Finding my own way back to art and learning everything from scratch did not happen overnight. I experimented with almost every medium I could get my hands on, teaching myself, making mistakes, starting again and slowly discovering the kind of artist I wanted to become.
I think I am still discovering her.
And perhaps I always will be.
I have so much passion for the things I love, and I tend to pour my heart and soul into everything I create. I want my work to inspire people to notice the little things. To see art in what they see, hear and feel, because I truly believe that art exists everywhere.
I want my art to become a footprint of my life. Something that grows and changes as I do. I could be inspired by a place, a memory, a colour, a feeling, a flower, a fleeting moment, or something completely ordinary.
Because, to me, there is a little bit of art in everything.
